CHANGING ROOMS & CHANGING FACILITIES POLICY

Summary

This policy sets out how changing spaces operate within our UK gyms. The terms and Conditions state our Changing Room Policy is as follows:

Purpose

NRG GYM is committed to providing safe, respectful and inclusive facilities for all members. The safety of our members and staff is our number one priority. This Policy has been developed with regard to the Equality Act 2010 and the EHRC Statutory Code of Practice, effective from 5 August 2026.

Types of changing spaces provided

NRG GYM provides:

  • Single-sex communal changing rooms, designated Male and Female; and
  • Individual-use, accessible and gender-neutral changing facilities, are provided.

Our individual-use accessible changing rooms are fully fitted with changing, shower and wash facilities and provide a private alternative to communal changing rooms.

Single-Sex Communal Changing Rooms

NRG GYM operates its communal changing rooms on a single-sex basis according to biological sex.

  • The Male changing room is designated for biologically male members.
  • The Female changing room is designated for biologically female members.

This approach reflects the current legal position under the Equality Act 2010 and EHRC guidance and is intended to protect the privacy, dignity and safety of members using communal facilities where changing and showering take place.

NRG GYM recognises that transgender people are protected under the Equality Act 2010 by the protected characteristic of gender reassignment. We will treat all members with dignity and respect and will not tolerate discrimination, harassment or inappropriate behaviour.

Individual-Use, Accessible & Gender-Neutral Facilities

These facilities provide a private alternative to communal changing rooms and may be used by:

  • Members with disabilities or accessibility requirements;
  • Members requiring additional privacy;
  • Members who do not identify in accordance with their biological sex;
  • Carers or guardians assisting another member.

Member Behaviour

NRG GYM operates a zero-tolerance approach to harassment, intimidation, abuse or inappropriate behaviour.

Members must not challenge, confront, intimidate, photograph, film or harass another member regarding their sex, gender identity or use of changing facilities.

Members should raise any concern privately with a member of the NRG GYM team rather than attempting to resolve the matter themselves.

Concerns will be handled sensitively and respectfully. NRG GYM will not disclose another member’s personal circumstances, gender identity or other confidential information.

Staff Access

Staff may enter changing facilities where reasonably required for cleaning, maintenance, repairs, health and safety, security or member assistance. Where reasonably practicable, advance notice will be provided, particularly where staff need to remain in the area for an extended period.

Raising a concern or query about changing room use

If you have a question about this Policy or wish to raise a concern about changing room use, we encourage you to speak to a member of staff privately. We will aim to ensure that any questions or concerns are handled sensitively and respectfully.

This Policy operates alongside the NRG GYM Gym Rules, Terms & Conditions, Harassment Policy and Health & Safety procedures.

NRG GYM will take reasonable and proportionate steps to ensure changing facilities are used in accordance with this Policy and that the privacy, dignity and safety of all members are maintained.

This Policy is non-contractual, and NRG GYM reserves the right to amend it from time to time.
